(WASHINGTON) – The American Federation of Government Employees today responded to the crisis in Haiti generated by an earthquake that devastated the country this week.

“We are deeply saddened by the unspeakable tragedy in Haiti and we offer our deepest sympathies to its people,” said John Gage, AFGE national president. “America’s working families, federal workers, and the labor community extends its complete support towards the recovery efforts.”

AFGE has joined with others in the labor community in encouraging its members to contribute financial assistance to those in need via the Haiti Earthquake Emergency Fund set up by the AFL-CIO’s Solidarity Center.

AFGE members include those federal employees who will be providing direct assistance to the Haitian people in the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
