About Us

Local 1923 in Perspective

Local 1923 was chartered as a labor organization in October, 1959. We represent approximately 30,000 employees in the Social Security Administration, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (formally HCFA), Veterans Affairs, Department of Defense, National Mediation Board , Department of Homeland Security and National Aeronautics Space Agency.

Local 1923’s is the largest federal union in the country with over 8,000 members and continuing to grow.

Our local president, Cynthia Ennis, officers and activists work extremely hard and take their responsibility seriously to ensure agency contracts are enforced properly and that all federal employees are treated fairly.

The American Federation of Government Employees is our parent organization, and is the largest union representing 600,000 employees across the nation and overseas.  Employees in virtually every function of government at every Federal agency depend upon AFGE for legal, legislative, technical and information services.

AFGE is also affiliated with the 13 million members of the AFL-CIO, and National President John Gage serves on the Executive Council.

Philosophically, Local 1923 believes it has a responsibility to help provide good government, while ensuring that government employees are treated fairly, equitably and with dignity.  Most importantly, Local 1923 feels that in order to improve the effectiveness of government services, federal employees must be viewed as valuable resources rather than easy targets.  We are strongly committed to protecting and enhancing the rights of federal employees and the people who depend upon their services.

Local 1923’s General Counsel, Phil Kete, and staff attorneys Eric Pines, James Richard and Ericka Lewis provide our members with top notch legal representation. Since 1990, our legal team has won in excess of 220 million on behalf of the employees it represents.

Our work, in concert with the AFGE National Office has put more money in our members’ pockets, provided transit subsidies rebates, work at home programs, extended credit hours, full pay for overtime and tackled contracting out mandates and personnel reform.

Local 1923 is proud to represent federal employees who touch almost every aspect of American life on a daily basis. It is our employees who treat American veterans, issue social security payments and earning statements, manage the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and maintain our military readiness.
