National AFGE
The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union representing 600,000 federal and D.C. government workers nationwide and overseas. Workers in virtually all functions of government at every federal agency depend upon AFGE for legal representation, legislative advocacy, technical expertise and informational services.

The union is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and divided into 12 geographical districts consisting of some 1,100 Locals. Over one-half of AFGE’s members are consolidated into agency-wide bargaining units. Agencies with the highest concentration of union membership include the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Social Security Administration and the Department of Justice.

As National President of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) AFL-CIO, John Gage stands watch over the rights of some 600,000 federal and D.C. government employees. Gage, who leads the nation’s largest union for government workers in some 1,100 locals in the United States and overseas, was elected national president at AFGE’s 2003 National Convention in Las Vegas, NV.

4th District AFGE
District Four AFGE National Vice President, Joseph P. Flynn was elected to the top leadership post at the District Caucus on May 14, 1999 and re-elected by Acclamation during a District Caucus on May 10, 2002.

There are more than 80 Locals under the fourth district representing employees working for both federal agencies and the private sector. States covered include Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland

AFL-CIO
As the federation of America’s unions, the AFL-CIO includes more than 13 million of America’s workers in 65 member unions working in virtually every part of the economy.

John J. Sweeney was elected president of the AFL-CIO at the federation’s biennial convention in October 1995 and has been re-elected twice since then.
